Surfers go to great lengths in order to have the ultimate surf session. It’s not unusual for them to stare at extensive weather data, set the alarm to 4:00 AM and learn from their past experiences to find the best waves.
When at a surf spot, surfers share “eyeball reports” to fellow surf buddies to quickly inform them about the conditions. After the session, they frequently report about their experience. WhatsApp is a popular albeit clumsy service for surfers to communicate conditions and experiences.
That’s where Tideline comes in. With the help of 2 passionate surf fanatics, I designed Tideline from scratch to provide surfers with the most streamlined way possible to report and share their experiences.
Some stories are meant to be told, others are considered to be competitive knowledge. While kindly asked not to divulge specifics, I’m not less proud to have shaped the concepts and designs for these organizations.
The value of these products includes improving workflows, making data insightful, training employees and providing services to customers.
ARVA was a cross platform development framework from the era just before giants such as React emerged. For this massive undertaking, I designed all parts necessary for a functional framework: UI components and their behavior, several icon sets and typefaces, and even an entire software suite to create applications in - including data binding, component states, collaboration features and more.
ARVA has been used by a development company internally to build and maintain about 20 unique projects for various clients.
I stumbled upon the old logo of 3D modeling software Verto Studio, a detailed model of a wheel about a centimeter in size in the App Store. I felt it was not relatable enough for potential customers. By improving it significantly I helped increase the conversion on iOS, macOS, Windows, and - as one of the very first - on the Microsoft HoloLens platform.
If you need to clean your house or office, mrBOX has the right storage solutions for you. Your stuff is then taken to a safe location, available on demand. Almost as if you’re treating physical objects like files in the cloud. For this to work so simply, the complexity of the service is vast. It concerns 3 extensive applications that seamlessly work together to serve consumers, management and logistics employees.
Innovating on UI elements is what I love most. This example shows the redesign of the Safari “add bookmark” panel. In the bottom image you can see the current way of adding a bookmark. It’s simple, it works, but it has the potential to be much better. It wastes space by being a “panel” with elements on top. In the redesign, the functional elements extend edge-to-edge so every pixel is utilized. The click targets are bigger, it is more evident which button is going to get activated if you hit “Enter”, and the background is darkened to clarify that interaction with the website is disabled while adding a bookmark.
This 20-year-old game still has dedicated fans with heartwarming stories, hoping for a future re-release - which happens to be almost finished. It’s been my responsibility to remaster the artwork and animations while preserving the feeling of the original game.
A retro style game for which I have just started designing the artwork and UI. What’s shown is the result of two days of art style exploration and the initial creation of the building blocks the game consists of.
BTCxChange is a sizeable service for trading Bitcoins and ICOs. For this project, I collaborated with another designer and an illustrator. The flows for payments and the information design for the financial statistics were my contributions. The average revenue quadrupled since the day the redesign launched because of higher initial conversion, incentive for more trading and a higher retention rate.
Friso lives in Amsterdam, so he needs a bike. In this city, it shouldn’t be harder than breathing to get one.
So he came up with LegalBikes, which allows you to instantly buy a bike in Amsterdam and enjoy the ride. Need one on Sunday morning 3AM? Done. For a concept this simple to work, it needed a way of buying a bike that is just as simple.
In no time, I helped Friso to create a very simple MPV. It allows people to find a bike nearby, make sure it’s the right one, and buy it in as few steps as possible - right from their mobile browser and without an account.
After selling a few hundred bikes with the help of good old social promotion, the MVP clearly showed its value. Time has come to bring LegalBikes to the next level, with improved automated advertisement, beautiful SEO-optimized articles, business cards and — most importantly — a much improved LegalBikes design that further simplifies and adds joy to the instant buying process.
That design is showcased here and will shortly make Friso and many others spin their wheels even faster!
